In World War I, soldiers from both sides of the trenches tried to experiment with armor that had been in use since the Middle Ages. The armor shown may have been picked up from dead bodies, or, they luckily managed to get minimal wounds from the gun shots.
Unfortunately, basic physics shows that a speeding bullet has enough energy to melt through metal.
They learned that the hard way.
